Is a Couples Intensive Worth It?

It's a fair question, and it usually means something more specific: this costs more than weekly sessions, so what am I actually getting. Here's the honest answer, including the situations where we'd tell you to spend the money differently.

What You're Actually Buying

Not more hours. Different hours. Our standard couples session runs 80 minutes, which is already well beyond the industry norm of 50. Even so, the shape of a weekly session has limits. Some of it goes to catching up on the week, something real opens partway through, and then it has to be closed down. Seven days later you return, and whatever you built has partly come apart, because life happened in between. An intensive removes that. Several hours a day across two or three days, with nothing else on the calendar. When something difficult surfaces at hour three, there's an hour four to work with it.

The Math People Don't Run

Compare it against what you'd otherwise spend. Two or three days of concentrated work covers ground that typically takes months of weekly sessions. When you add up several months of fees, the difference narrows considerably, and that's before counting the months you'd spend still living inside the problem. For couples who are genuinely stuck, the intensive is often the less expensive route.

Who Gets the Most From It

Couples who have been in weekly therapy and keep landing in the same place. The format is usually the obstacle, not the work. Couples dealing with something significant, like a betrayal, where the conversation genuinely needs more room than any single session allows and shouldn't be reopened weekly without ever finishing. Couples whose schedules make consistent weekly sessions unrealistic, which is common for physicians, attorneys, and shift workers. And couples who want a strong start before beginning ongoing work, or who are mid-therapy and want to break through something that hasn't moved.

Who Should Spend It Elsewhere

We'd rather tell you this now than take your deposit. If one of you doesn't want to be there, two days is a long time in a room with someone who was dragged in. Discernment counseling is the better first step when one partner is leaning out.

If there's an active affair, repair can't hold on a foundation with a secret in it. If there's abuse, intensive couples work isn't safe. And if you can't commit to weekly therapy afterward, the gains won't hold, and we'd rather you put the investment somewhere it will.

It's a Start, Not a Cure

That last point matters enough to repeat. An intensive is designed to hand off into ongoing weekly therapy. We'll ask who your couples therapist is, and we recommend securing one and booking that first appointment before the intensive begins. Coming out with a session already on the calendar is very different from coming out intending to find someone.

Couples Intensives in Houston

We offer two-day and three-day couples intensives in Houston, alongside ongoing couples therapy in person and virtually across Texas. Add-on single days are available once you've completed a two-day or three-day intensive.

  1. How to Decide

If weekly sessions have moved things, keep going. If they haven't, or if what you're carrying needs more room than an hour a week allows, this format exists for that.

Contact us and we'll talk through whether it fits where you are.
