What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a structured therapy approach designed to lessen the effects of distressing memories, trauma, anxiety, PTSD, and limiting beliefs that have become stuck in the mind and body. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require you to describe every detail of what happened or spend session after session retelling your story. Instead, it works by helping the brain reprocess difficult experiences in a way that reduces their emotional charge, so they no longer have the same grip on your present-day life.
Developed by a Woman Who Changed the Field
EMDR was developed in the late 1980s by Dr. Francine Shapiro, a psychologist who made a groundbreaking observation: that certain eye movements appeared to reduce the intensity of disturbing thoughts and memories. What started as a chance discovery became one of the most rigorously researched and widely respected therapeutic approaches in the world. Today, EMDR is recognized by the World Health Organization, the American Psychological Association, and the Department of Veterans Affairs as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD, among other conditions. The fact that this approach was pioneered by a woman and has since helped millions of people process some of the hardest experiences of their lives is not something we take lightly.
How EMDR Works and Who It Can Help
At its core, EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation, most commonly eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones, to engage both sides of the brain while you briefly focus on a distressing memory or belief. This process helps your brain do what it could not do on its own, move the experience from a raw, reactive state into something that can be stored as a memory without hijacking your nervous system every time it surfaces.
What It Actually Feels Like
One of the things clients tell us most often after EMDR sessions is that they feel a sense of relief that surprises them. Even when a triggering memory comes up during processing, they find they can get to a place of calm, sometimes for the first time in a very long time. The memory does not disappear. But it loses its grip. They can visit it without being consumed by it, and that shift is often profound.
What EMDR Can Help With
EMDR therapy is effective for a wide range of experiences and conditions, including:
• Trauma and PTSD
• Anxiety and chronic stress
• Limiting beliefs that keep you stuck
• Depression
• Grief and loss
• Eating disorders
• Shame and guilt
• Phobias and fears
• Betrayal trauma and relationship wounds
Research consistently shows that EMDR produces significant and lasting results, often in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy, making it one of the most efficient and evidence-based approaches available today.
Why We Use EMDR at Unload It Therapy
We chose to bring EMDR into our practice because of how it addresses the things that are typically most distressing. Talk therapy is powerful, but some experiences, especially trauma, shame, and deeply rooted beliefs, are not always fully accessible through conversation alone. They live in the body, in the nervous system, in places that words do not always reach. EMDR offers a gentler, more direct path to those places.
Our vision is for EMDR to be available practice-wide at Unload It Therapy, so that every client who walks through our doors, whether in person in Houston or online across Texas, has access to this approach when it is the right fit for their work. We are building toward that intentionally because we believe deeply in what this modality can do for the people we serve.
If you are curious whether EMDR is right for what you are working through, the best place to start is a conversation with us. We will help you figure that out together.

You May Still Have Some Questions About EMDR

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a therapy approach designed to help your brain reprocess distressing memories, trauma, anxiety, and limiting beliefs so they no longer have the same hold on your daily life. It uses bilateral stimulation, most commonly eye movements, to help you process experiences that have gotten stuck in your nervous system.
-
Yes. EMDR is one of the most well-researched therapeutic approaches available and is recognized by the World Health Organization, the American Psychological Association, and the Department of Veterans Affairs as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD. Many clients experience significant relief in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy. We offer flexible payment options ,including CareCredit, Affirm, and Klarna, to make it as accessible as possible, and HSA and FSA benefits may be applicable.
Keep in mind you don’t have to do an intensive. Weekly EMDR sessions remain highly effective! The Intensives give more time to reprocess what is there over the course of hours rather than months.
-
No, and that is one of the things that makes EMDR different. You do not have to narrate every detail of what happened. EMDR works by helping your brain process the experience without requiring you to relive it the way traditional talk therapy sometimes does. Many clients find this approach much gentler than they expected.
-
Most clients describe a growing sense of calm, even when difficult memories come up during processing. The memory does not disappear, but it loses its emotional grip. You can visit it without being consumed by it. That shift is often one of the most surprising and meaningful parts of the process..
-
It depends on what you are working through and how your system responds. Some people notice significant shifts in just a few sessions. Others need more time, especially if there are multiple experiences to process or deeper patterns to address. We will give you a realistic picture of what to expect after your initial consultation.
-
Not at all. While EMDR is best known for treating trauma and PTSD, it is also highly effective for anxiety, depression, grief, eating disorders, shame, guilt, limiting beliefs, phobias, and relationship wounds. If something is stuck and affecting your life, EMDR may be able to help.

-
Traditional talk therapy works primarily through conversation and insight. EMDR works by engaging the brain's natural processing system using bilateral stimulation, which allows it to reach experiences that conversation alone sometimes cannot fully resolve. The two approaches complement each other well, and we often use EMDR alongside other modalities depending on what a client needs.
-
Yes. EMDR is a well-established, evidence-based approach that has been used safely with millions of people worldwide. We take your comfort and safety seriously throughout every session, starting with a preparation phase designed to make sure you have the grounding tools you need before any processing begins.
